The Blue Cave, also known as the “Blue Grotto,” is a popular diving and snorkeling spot located on the island of Zakynthos in Greece. The cave is located on the northeastern coast of the island and is accessible from the town of Agios Nikolaos. The cave is known for its bright blue waters, which are caused by sunlight reflecting off the white sandy bottom of the cave. Once at the caves, you’ll have a unique water-level appreciation of the iridescent blue colours created by the play of sunlight on the cliff-face and the sea, together with the occasional orange-purple hit of coral in the rocks. Every one of the caves seems to put on a different light show just for you.
Best time to visit is in the early morning when the sun is at its highest and the water is the brightest. Inside the cave, divers and snorkelers can expect to see a variety of marine life, including fish, sea urchins, and sponges.
There’s a view of your island-neighbor Kefalonia that adds to an experience that feels so much more intimate than it would on a boat.
