Badia - Deer beach

Badija is the largest among 19 islets in the vicinity of Korčula and formally it is the largest islet in Croatia.

Among all the beaches worldwide, how many let you hang out with animals? In Aruba, there are flamingos; in the Bahamas, you can swim with pigs. Mexico offers scuba diving with sea turtles, and in Thailand, watch out for monkeys eyeing your snacks. But what about Croatia? Near Korčula, there’s a small islet with a lovely beach where friendly deer roam freely. Bring some snacks, and they’ll happily come over to eat from your hand.

Red deer have been living on the island Badija since 1958, when two couples were brought from Brijuni National Park. We’re not exactly sure how many red deer there are today, but it’s believed there are over a dozen of them, varying in size and age. These red deer are incredibly friendly to island visitors, especially if you bring them some food. While they won’t let you touch them, you can still enjoy their company and capture some lovely photos with them. Being on such a small island surrounded by turquoise seas makes the experience truly unique and picturesque.

For those with an interest in marine life, Cala Moresca offers a diverse underwater world waiting to be explored. Snorkelers can discover vibrant coral reefs, schools of colorful fish, and other fascinating marine creatures. The pristine conditions of the water contribute to the preservation of the delicate ecosystem, making Cala Moresca a paradise for both experienced and novice snorkelers.

Badija is the largest among 19 islets in the vicinity of Korčula and formally it is the largest islet in Croatia. Namely, it only lacks 0.03 square kilometres to be an island. The islet got its name from the 500-year-old Franciscan monastery (Latin: Abbatia), which was built in the 15th century and still dominates the view of Badija today. The five-hundred-year-old monastery was converted into a resort in the 1950s, but in 2003 it was returned to the possession of the Franciscans. Today it is renovated and very impressive, and can also be visited by prior arrangement.

During the summer, it’s very easy to visit Badija with a smaller boat or tender. There is a café-restaurant open during the summer, and also during the season, where it is possible to rent lounge chairs and use showers, allowing you to spend a relaxed day among the deer on these amazing beaches.
