Vis, Croatia

City is a stage

The island of Vis has a rich history and stunning natural beauty, which were recognized by one of the Hollywood productions (Mamma Mia 2 movie). With some of Croatia’s most stunning beaches, charming alleys, fragrant pine trees and picturesque old stone houses, Vis offers unique holiday escape. Notably, the American Harper’s Bazaar has ranked Vis as one of the top three romantic destinations in the world, while European Best Destinations has placed one of its beaches – Stiniva Beach at the top of Europe’s most beautiful beaches. This open sea island is an area with the highest concentration of natural monuments in Croatia, which is why the UNESCO World Geopark Network declared the Vis Archipelago a Geopark in 2019. Marked geo-hiking trails in Komiža tell stories about rocks, dry-stone walls, tradition and the coexistence of man and nature.

Komiža Town
Nestled in a deep bay on the western side of the island of Vis, beneath the towering 600m high mountain of Hum, lies charming town of Komiža. With a population of 1500 locals, Komiža has the vibe of a typical Mediterranean village, attracting visitors with its stunning beaches and labyrinthine streets of narrow houses around the bustling harbour. The origins of Komiža date back to the second half of the 12th century, making it the centre of fishing activity in the eastern Adriatic. Proud of its maritime heritage, Komiža is home to the Fishermen’s Museum, housed in the old Venetian tower along the seafront, which displays traditional fishing tools and artefacts.
A visit to Komiža is like stepping back in time, where the pace of life slows to a tranquil rhythm, inviting visitors to fully embrace it. Our personal favourite is the charming central square, a meeting place for locals who gather every morning for a drink and offer a glimpse of the authentic Dalmatian lifestyle. In Komiža, every corner tells a story, every moment whispers the beauty of simplicity, making it a destination not just to visit, but to savour and cherish.

The Blue Cave
The caves on the nearby island Biševo are impressive, especially the Blue Cave, which is the most famous. It rivals the beauty of the renowned Grotta Azzurra in Italy. The Blue Cave is located on the northern coast of the island and is easily identifiable in the summer months by the boats anchored at its entrance. The sea echoes off the cave walls, creating a unique musical experience. The external light enters the cave through an underwater opening, creating a magical atmosphere. The opening is 10 meters wide and lies 18 meters below the sea surface. Sailing into the cave alone, through a mysterious and dark tunnel, evokes discomfort and awe, as if it were the dwelling place of some mythical creature. The sea floor reflects light, casting an unreal turquoise hue. The sea in the cave can resemble molten silver, depending on the time of day and angle of light refraction.

The Best Beaches
Vis Island’s beaches have captivated visitors worldwide for years. Stiniva, the most famous and attractive cove on the island, has been declared one of the most beautiful beaches countless times. In 2016, it was awarded the title of the most beautiful beach among the 300 most beautiful beaches in Europe. Stiniva is situated on the southern side of the island, and its natural beauty has been preserved due to the lack of a road leading to it. The white gravel, crystal-clear sea, and rocks surrounding the beach like guardians create a magnificent sight that you will surely enjoy.
Second-best beach is Pritišćina Bay is situated on the southern side of Vis Island. You can access it via a challenging dirt road from Podhumlje or a pleasant sea ride. It is a small bay but a popular nautical stop. The incredible gravel beach with crystal-clear blue sea is almost impossible to capture in photographs. Once seen, it makes you forget about the fatigue, stress, and monotony of everyday life.
Stončica bay is a charming cove and beach that is a popular summer destination. Srebrena beach is covered with unusually large white limestone pebbles, while Mala Travna is adorned with beautiful white rocks for sunbathing. Grandovec and many other beaches are also worth visiting for fun and excitement.

Former military zone island
Vis island was a large military base of the former Yugoslavia, so the island was closed to tourism and visitors until the early ‘90s. Some say that time has stood still on the island, attracting Robinson Crusoe-like visitors and those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Mysterious and abandoned military installations, with the labyrinth of underground tunnels, remnants of cannons, and abandoned warehouses will make you feel like you’re in a James Bond movie, and you can explore them as part of exciting military tours.

Local wine & dine destination
In addition to its fishing and cultural heritage, Vis is also known for its culinary delights. “Viška pogača” is a highly popular dish throughout Dalmatia. It is traditionally made from bread dough filled with red onions and salted sardines. In Komiža, locals also add tomato sauce, resulting in another version called “Komiška pogača”. Both versions are served in all restaurants and make for a great appetizer before the main course.
Additionally, be sure to taste Vugava, an indigenous wine variety produced on Vis for thousands of years. Vis cuisine is renowned as one of the best in Croatia, with many traditional dishes dating back to ancient times. Excellent dining experiences can be enjoyed at various restaurants and taverns, such as Pojoda, Villa Kaliopa, Konoba Stončica, Jastožera, Bako and Roki’s.
