Russia plan to invest in boating tourism on the Black sea coast

Despite the ongoing military conflict with Ukraine and unprecedented sanctions imposed by West, Russia plans to continue the development of its leisure marine sector as it looks to capitalise on the sharp drop in outbound tourism.

The government claims to be wanting to continue with the implementation of the majority of the investment projects that had been on the cards prior to its invasion of Ukraine, including the building of a network of marinas on the Black sea coast of the country, as well as the development of boating tourism on the country’s river system. In the latter case, perhaps the most significant investment project will be implemented on the Volga river, where one of the country’s largest marinas is set to be built in the Laishevo district of the Tatarstan Republic.

According to Tatarstan-based Realnoey Vremy magazine, the new marina will be located on the total area of 40 ha and will have the status of one of the largest and most modern marinas in Russia.

The volume of investments in the project is estimated at RUB 25 billion (US$454 million). Building of the new marina and associated infrastructure will, according to local sources, attract up to 2 million Russian tourists to the Laishevo and the Tatarstan Republic in the coming years.

The project will be implemented by Tourism.RF state corporation, with the new marina expected to be located in the Kuybyshev Reservoir – one of the largest reservoirs in Europe and third largest in the world by surface area.
