Spanish boat registrations down in 2022

Spain’s national pleasure boat registrations in the January-October 2022 period fell by a total of 16.2%, but the drop in the Balearic Islands was only 5.1% for a total of 1,041 boats.

The statistics are based on data collected in the ‘Recreational boat market report January-October 2022’, edited by ANEN (Asociacion Nacional de Empresas Nauticas) and based on data provided by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine. ANEN is Spain’s national marine leisure association.

The Balearic Islands continue to reinforce their leadership in the national nautical market, bringing together 19.1% of registrations, compared to 16.9% a year ago. The archipelago is the province with the largest market share in this area, followed by Barcelona with 10.8%, and Girona with 7.1%.

“Following the forecast of the preceding months, the nautical market maintains the 16% drop in the accumulated figure for the year, improving one point on the figure for the previous period (January-September). This situation of stability gives the sector a certain margin to face the effects of the supply crisis that affects with greater incidence the segment of small boats and jet skis,” says Carlos Sanlorenzo, secretary general of ANEN.

In the accumulated figure for the year, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands remain the most prominent areas of Spain in terms of marine leisure activities with market shares of 20.3% and 19.1% respectively.

As for charter, the Balearic Islands continue to lead with a 32% share of the market, and growth in the number of boats registered for charter of 28.9%. Also noteworthy was the increase in the number of boats registered for rent/charter in the coastal territories of Ceuta, Cádiz, Las Palmas, Tarragona and Cantabria.
