The municipality of El Astillero in Spain’s northern autonomous community of Cantabria is planning a new 70-berth marina located between the existing Orconera and San José docks, according El Diario Cantabria.
The project is currently under deliberation by the Santander Port Authority (APS) whose approval is needed in order to launch a tender to choose who will build the marina.
Francisco Martín, APS president, said the existing marinas situated along the Bay of Santander are not large enough to accommodate the “increasing demand” for berths, and the designed marina could “help cover this need”.
The planned facility would cover a surface area of 9,000m², and would accommodate yachts from 8m-10m (26ft-33ft).
El Astillero has a population of more than 18,000 inhabitants, according to the state-run National Statistics Institute.
