The Redeia Posidonia Marine Forest in Pollença, Mallorca, has been awarded the 10th Anniversary All-Star Award from the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) for successfully restoring two hectares of Posidonia oceanica meadows. This award recognizes the initiative as the best practice in European electricity transmission grids over the past decade.

The RGI is an organization that promotes renewable energies and biodiversity. They hold an annual Good Practice of the Year Awards to acknowledge outstanding projects in European electricity systems. The nominated projects are evaluated by a jury consisting of senior European Commission officials and academics. In celebration of the awards’ 10th anniversary, a new category has been added to honor the best among the winners of the past 10 years. The Redeia Marine Forest was recognized as the best practice of the year in 2017. It has been praised for its research-driven restoration and serves as a remarkable example of what can be achieved.

The project is a collaboration between Redeia, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), the Balearic Government, and the Pollença Military Aerodrome. Its focus is on regenerating Posidonia seagrass meadows in the Balearic Islands. This ecosystem supports over 700 species and plays a vital role in combating climate change. The project has developed a technique for the recovery of these marine spaces, demonstrating a commitment to future environmental preservation.

Eva Pagán, Redeia’s Corporate Director of Sustainability, highlights the positive impact that large companies like Redeia can have on the environment. She expressed pride in the recognition received for the initiative’s contribution to protecting the Mediterranean’s biodiversity and fighting against climate change. Eva Pagán received an award at the PCI Days event organized by the European Commission. Ditte Juul-Jorgensen, the Director General for Energy, was present at the event.

The Redeia Marine Forest project began in 2012 in connection with the Mallorca-Ibiza submarine cable. The project is linked to the development of infrastructures. Its aim was to regenerate Posidonia oceanica meadows, a plant species crucial for preserving aquatic ecosystems and storing organic carbon. The experimental phase was successful, leading to the replantation of Posidonia seeds and fragments in the bays of Santa Ponça and Talamanca. In 2018, a large number of fragments were planted, creating the first underwater forest of this size in the Mediterranean.

The survival rate of the planted Posidonia fragments remains above 92.3% as of 2023, demonstrating the success of the project. Redeia is continuing to work on expanding the initiative to other areas of the Mediterranean.

The Redeia Posidonia Marine Forest project has previously received recognition, including the European Business Award for the Environment in the Business and Biodiversity category in 2018 and the Cinco Días Business Innovation Award in 2019.
