Southern Wind presents his first hybrid sailing yacht

"Sexy and sustainable"

South African shipyard Southern Wind specialises in building high-performance, custom sailing yachts between 25 and 40 metres in length, featuring blue-water reliability and a comfortable sailing experience.

The recently launched „Nyumb“a, the brand’s first hybrid sailing yacht, was commissioned by a young owner who is a passionate sailor. The owner’s vision was to have a powerful, efficient sailing yacht that could be used to sail shorthanded around the world as well as compete in top superyacht regattas.
The client opted for the 96-foot variant from Southern Wind’s “Smart Custom” range and challenged the yard to optimise the model to build “a sexy, comfortable, reliable and above all sustainable yacht”.

Nyumbar is the yard’s first yacht to feature an electric hybrid propulsion system developed in collaboration with BAE Systems. The patented HybridGen system is designed to meet the most stringent environmental regulations in the world. It is emission-free and features a HydroGeneration mode for charging the lithium-ion energy storage under sail.

The sleek and elegant exterior profile was penned by Massimo Gino of Nauta Design, who was also responsible for the yacht’s comfortable and cosy interior. “Nyumba’s deck design is the evolution of the successful GT deck concept,” explains Gino. “The clear, uncluttered layout of the deck equipment allows for easy circulation on board, and the mainsail track and helm stations are completely new.”
