On the Granada coast of the Costa Tropical, the city of Motril is about to embark on an ambitious transformation, the construction of Marina Motril, scheduled to begin in March 2026 with a planned grand opening in spring 2028.
Vision and Urban Transformation
The new marina will occupy 100,000 m² on a former logistics site within the port area. Replacing the outdated Club Náutico and dry marina, it will offer 700 berths , 450 wet and 250 dry, more than doubling the current capacity of Granada’s coastline, which now has just 427 berths between Marina del Este and Club Náutico de Motril
Architectural and Design Approach
The project, led by Chapman Taylor, aims to reconnect the city with its waterfront through a blend of marina facilities and vibrant public spaces. Inspired by Mediterranean and Nasrid architectural styles, the design includes a 15,000 m² commercial village, a mix of local shops, restaurants, and a zoco-style marketplace enhanced with gardens and water features, plus an underground car park with almost 600 spaces.
The plan also calls for the Aula del Mar, a marine research and education center in partnership with the University of Granada, and a Nautical Club featuring swimming pools, a gym, coworking and event areas, and docking for small sailing and water sports vessels.
Advanced Boatyard and Service Facilities
Marina Motril will feature a 21,000 m² yacht repair yard, equipped with two travel lifts, one with a 110-ton capacity and another at 450 tons, set to become the largest in the southern Mediterranean.
Sustainability at the Core
Part of the Green Motril initiative by Grupo Cuerva, the marina will operate entirely on renewable energy. Importantly, no new sea inlet will be created, ensuring marine ecosystems remain undisturbed. The project also integrates environmental education and research directly into its design.
Economic and Social Impact
With an investment of over €30 million, the marina is expected to create more than 150 direct jobs and stimulate tourism, retail, hospitality, and marine services sectors.
Wider Port Development
In parallel, the Spanish government is investing €4.4 million to upgrade security and operational facilities at the Port of Motril. Works include a new Guardia Civil station for 89 officers, solar-panel canopies for sustainable energy, a new vehicle inspection hall, and an expanded Border Inspection Post (PIF) to improve customs and health checks on imported goods.
The PIF team has also been reinforced with a new plant health inspector and an administrative assistant, enhancing inspection capabilities. As of mid-2025, cargo throughput at the port has already risen by around 7% compared to the same period in 2024.
