Dana Point Harbor renovation underway

Construction crews are onsite and have begun demolition of deteriorating docks, the first US$100m phase of a 17-step overhaul totalling US$400m.

Dana Point Harbor Partners, LLC, a collaboration between Orange County and three real estate development firms, have produced a master plan that “connects the harbour’s landside and waterside to become a singular cohesive waterfront experience,” according to the Harbor’s website.

Led by Bellwether Financial Group, which runs the marina operations including the boat slips, boater facilities, dry boat storage, day-boat parking and launch ramp areas, the other two partners are RD Olson Development, leading the hotel redevelopment and hospitality components, and Burnham Ward Properties is responsible for stewarding the harbour’s Commercial Core activities featuring the retail, restaurants, offices and other landside buildings, as well as all parkscape areas.

The partnership secured the renovation project in 2018 through a 66-year lease from Orange County.

Opened in 1972, the Marina at Dana Point Harbor offers 2,400 slips to accommodate vessels from 21ft-85ft. Embarcadero at Dana Point offers dry storage for up to 464 boats and trailers from 18ft-25ft.

The marina will be able to host vessels of all sizes with the newly designed slip layout, and each slip will have its own pump-out station.

The renovation is expected to take five to seven years to complete.
