The Cap de Barbaria, which is being built by Astilleros Armón of Vigo for the shipping company Baleària, is close to its first sea trials. This vessel will be the first electric passenger and cargo ferry to enter service in Spain and is expected to enter service on the route between Ibiza and Formentera in the first fortnight of May.
The new vessel looks practically ready, as can be seen in the image disseminated through social networks by Javier Alonso Castro. The new ferry aims to “promote eco-efficient and sustainable travel, and will guarantee a reliable and quality service for residents of Formentera and for the supply of goods to the island”, the shipping company explains on its website
The Cap de Barbaria will not produce polluting emissions on the approach or during operations, nor during the stay in port, and has a double-ended design that gives it the same operational capacity fore and aft. The vessel is 82 metres long and will be able to sail at a cruising speed of 14 knots.
The new ferry will have the capacity to carry 14 trucks and 350 passengers and will be prepared to become a test laboratory for the use of green hydrogen in the futur
