The fact that it is zero-emission is perhaps the least striking thing about this vessel. The Plectrum is a 15,000 hp hydrogen yacht created to be the fastest in its class thanks to its mechanics in combination with the use of lightweight materials.
Everything is impressive about The Plectrum. It measures 74 meters in length and is painted in a metallic orange color that makes it really difficult to go unnoticed.
Its design is said to be inspired by America’s Cup boats, but while these rely on the wind to move them forward, The Plectrum mounts an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system.
The hydrogen yacht is equipped with three engines, located one at the front and two on the sides. Together they add up to a power of 15,000 hp thanks to which it can sail at 75 knots.
As we have said, the choice of resistant and lightweight materials such as dry carbon fiber and composite materials contribute to its figures. Among its innovations is also the fact that the side hydrofoils (in which the engines are placed) can be folded and unfolded (adding five meters to the width of the ship in this case) according to the needs of navigation.
Four-level interior
Inside, it is no less impressive. Divided into four levels, she has a main floor with six luxuriously appointed staterooms for guests plus an even more luxurious master suite for the owners.
There is also space for a swimming pool, a hangar where a helicopter can land, a garage for two dinghies and a rear garage for water toys and a car (which could well be a Toyota Mirai or a Hyundai Nexo, as hydrogen cars).
Lazzarini Design estimates that The Plectrum could go on sale in 2025, making it the largest hydrofoil in the world. The estimated price would be around 87 million euros.
